CLUB HISTORY
South Sunnybank RLFC - Logo 2018.jpg

Souths Sunnybank Rugby League Club was founded in 1967 by Jim Murdoch.  With one junior team initially, it quickly grew to four junior teams the following year.

In 1970 the club won its first of many premierships and in 1971 added its first senior team.

Souths Sunnybank is proud to be one of the only two clubs that have played in the Brisbane 2nd Division senior competition every year since its inception in 1971.

Souths Sunnybank has a long, proud history producing many representative players that include NRL, Queensland and Australian representative superstars Mark Coyne, Lote Tuqiri and Johnathan Thurston.

As is the tradition of this club we are now starting to see third generations of players coming through our ranks. Numerous past players returning to pass on the traditions and experience they had learned during their past involvement with this mighty club.

In 2007 we celebrated our 40th anniversary with over 500 past and present Souths Sunnybank members, staff and players attending and reminiscing. In 2017, we celebrated our 50th anniversary at our 50th anniversary Gala Ball with the new and the old members of our Sunnybank community as well as special guests speakers.

Our role in the community is not just about the on-field activity, we are a community orientated not for profit club that has a rich and successful past.  With our well developed blueprint and a finger on the pulse of new innovations in our game, we will carry the club and its members into the future.

OUR VENUE

Apart from our Clubhouse, our venue also boasts a number of facilities that are available for use to our local community and Sunnybank family.

Our most recent modification being the opening of the "Ron Berry Can Bar" - renamed after one of the most influential and supportive members of our club, Ron Berry. He has had a massive impact on our club both on the field and behind the scenes and this recognition was very well deserved.

We also have an on-site gym that is currently leased by K2 Transformation. This is known as the "Russ Young Memorial Gym". Titled so in recognition and memory of member Russell Young.

JIM MURDOCH OVAL

Jim Murdoch Oval is the main field at our club, located closest to the clubhouse, gym and can bar.

This field pays tribute to Jim Murdoch, a founding member of our great club, the foundation president and one of our life members. He was an instrumental piece and driving force behind the establishment of the club, building Souths Sunnybank from the previous horse paddock it was and striving to commence operations in 1967.

JOHNATHAN THURSTON FIELD

This field is our second field further-est from the clubhouse facilities - used for junior games, training purposes, trials and gala days.

The field was named after the one and only, Johnathan Thurston in 2014, paying tribute to the Australian, Queensland and Cowboy's play-making career who once stepped foot on our club grounds. Now retired, the field played a key part in where he built his love for the game and learnt the basics of Rugby League before relocating to Toowoomba to complete his schooling.
